NSEP Cutoff 2026: MAS, MI & INPhO Selection

Understand Group A and B, MAS, merit index, state representation, INPhO and the path to the International Physics Olympiad.

2026–27 cycleChecked 20 October 2026

Two groups. The same paper.

GroupClass on 30 November 2026INPhO selection target
AClass XIIAt least 200, subject to the selection rules
BClass X or XIAt least 200, subject to the selection rules

The paper and syllabus are identical. MAS, merit index and selection are worked out separately for each group.

MAS is a minimum, not a qualification guarantee.

Take the average of the ten highest scores in your group. Half that average, rounded down, gives the Minimum Admissible Score (MAS). A score below MAS does not qualify through the ordinary selection clauses.

MAS = floor(0.50 × top-ten average)

The Merit Index (MI) is 80% of that average, rounded down. An otherwise eligible student at or above MI qualifies for INPhO.

MI = floor(0.80 × top-ten average)

Other selection rules

  • State/UT representation: quotas support nationwide participation. The MAS condition still applies.
  • Ties: candidates tied at the last qualifying position are included under the relevant clause.
  • Minimum number: additional candidates can be selected by merit to reach the target, subject to MAS.
  • Female representation: a supplementary quota aims for at least 20% female representation among those selected, subject to the brochure’s conditions and MAS.
  • Previous international representatives: specified candidates may request direct INO entry under the exemption clause. This is not a general alternative to NSEP.

What happens after NSEP?

  1. Check the shortlist: HBCSE states it will be published by 15 January 2027.
  2. Register for INPhO separately: this is mandatory even after selection.
  3. Take INPhO: scheduled for 31 January 2027, 9 a.m.–noon.
  4. OCSC Physics: the target is 20 students from each group, with ties and other rules applying.
  5. Indian team: five students are selected using combined camp merit; there is no separate A/B team quota.
  6. Training and IPhO: selected students train before the international competition.

If you qualify in more than one subject

You may attend only one OCSC or IMOTC in a year. You submit your subject preference order during mandatory INO registration; selection uses that order and your qualifying results.

For Indian-team selection, an Indian passport must be held by the start of OCSC and remain valid for at least six months beyond the international Olympiad. The separate provisional OCI policy still applies.

There is no honest fixed “safe score” before the current paper is evaluated. Previous-year thresholds are historical information, not a promise of qualification.

Has the 2026 cutoff been published?

The 22 November 2026 exam is still ahead as of this review. MAS and MI depend on actual results and are calculated separately for Group A and Group B. The calculator above is illustrative, not an announced threshold or a qualification predictor.

For result dates, scorecards and the shortlist, use the result guide. Crossing MAS alone does not guarantee INPhO selection.
